News : Design, buil and installation 7 meter radome

This month a 7-meter composite radome was successfully installed on the Dutch LPD-2 naval vessel. The engineering activities of this unique product started in June 2006 and involved concept and detailed design, including FEM analysis of the radome structure, composite – metal interface and internal structure to support the antenna. The prototype of the radome was filament wound with glas prepreg, cured in an autoclave and tested including the antenna system. The 4-hour vibration test performed at TNO in Delft was passed successfully and a go-ahead was given for the manufacturing of the final product. After applying a specific coating in the paint booth of Airborne Composites the FAT was completed with the Dutch Navy at January 30, 2007.

The installation of the radome on the newest Dutch Navy vessel (see picture above, orange circle) was the final milestone and completed another successful cooperation between Airborne and the Dutch Navy in the development of advanced composite structures.
