News : Composite flywheel systems

In January 2006, Airborne Composites, delivered 3 carbon fiber flywheels to CCM in Nuenen, The Netherlands. These flywheels with a diameter of 625 mm and a length of 280 mm are designed for 22,0000 rpm (26,400 overspeed). The Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS) built with these flywheels are currently tested in several mobile applications, Rail: a Citadis tram (Alstom) in Rotterdam (RET), Road: Autotram (Fraunhofer Gesellschaft) and Water: a floating grab crane in the Amsterdam harbour. In the pictures below on the left the Citadis tram is shown and on the right the installed carbon flywheel.

The CCM flywheel technology is designed for a long service life time (up to 30 years) and the high energy efficiency, compared to battery and super capacitor storage systems. The newest development means a considerable reduction in weight and volume, as a result of CCM"s many years of experience in high power and high-speed flywheel systems.
