Airborne Composites is one of the partners the European Clean Sky technology development program. The goal in this 7 year - 800 million Euro program is to develop technologies for "greening the aircraft": 40% reduction in CO2 emission and 50% noise reduction. Airborne is involved in two programs: Smart Fixed Wing Aircraft and Green Rotorcraft. Airborne will develop smart structures (integration of sensors and active materials in the composite laminate) that will be used in the smart aircraft wing and rotor blade to improve efficiency and reduce noise through active vibration suppression. Another topic is development of new improved production technologies (injection technologies and thermoplastic composites) to further reduce the weight of the components and to reduce the energy use during production.
