News : Extremely Large Telescope Industry day

ESO is currently developing the European - Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), an optical-IR telescope which will have a 42 meter diameter mirror. This will be the next large scale facility for astronomical research, after the VLT and ALMA. The E-ELT is likely to provide particularly dramatic advances in our understanding of the Universe, and will cover a huge range of scientific topics: from our own solar system to extra-solar planets, from nearby galaxies to the furthest observable objects at the edge of the visible Universe, from fundamental physics to cosmology. The project is led by ESO in collaboration with the European astronomical community and industry.

On 2 October, an Industry Day was organised by the Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA) and Airborne toinform the Dutch industry about the status of the project and opportunities for cooperation. Jason Spyromilio, the E-ELT project manager, presented the project, the science cases and the technical details of the telescope.
