On February 5, 2008 Airborne established her first design and build facility outside The Netherlands in Girona, Spain. With this geographical expansion, the group has become part of the growing composites market in Spain and is able to use the strong technological base available in this part of Europe. A close cooperation is set up with the AMADE group of the University of Girona (UdG), specializing in computational mechanics and (virtual) testing of advanced composites. Furthermore Airborne in Spain will focus on smart materials by embedding sensors and sub-systems into composites, which is one of the research themes of the Airborne group. In the coming six months the building of workshop and engineering offices will be finished at the Science and Technology Parc of the UdG. The workshop will have, among others, a conditioned area and autoclave to process composites for the aerospace, defence and automotive clients. In the second quarter of this year the site will open and with this the engineering and manufacturing activities will start.
