On the 29th of July 2009 the UK-DMC-2 (Disaster Monitoring Constellation) satellite was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This satellite was designed and integrated by Surrey Satelite Technology ltd. (UK), and the deployable solar panel was built by Airborne. In the picture below the UK-DMC2 is shown together with the Deimos-1 satellite, to be integrated onboard the Dnepr rocket. UK-DMC-2 is the third satellite to orbit the earth with solar panel substrates installed which were manufactured by Airborne, all 3 listed:
- CFESat - launched March 2007, scientific test mission
- Delphi-C3 - launched April 2008, experimental nanosatellite
- UK-DMC-2 - launched July 2009, earth observation satellite
The next space missions for Airborne panels will be Sentinel 1, earth observation missions within the GMES program of the EU. Dutch Space and Airborne have just kicked-off the phase of building the solar array wings for the first two Sentinel 1 spacecrafts. The Sentinel 1 mission is planned to be launched by ESA in 2011.
